What is Tea Tree Oil?
Tea tree oil is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia. Historically, the leaves were used as a substitute for tea, which is how tea tree oil got its name. The part used medicinally is the oil from the leaves. The secret ingredient in tea tree oil is a chemical called Terpenen-4- ol. It has been used for centuries by aborigines in Australia where the plant grows. Known bby many as the most powerful natural antiseptic known to man, this unique oil has numerous benefits due to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties.
Tea tree oil can also be used as a disinfectant and all purpose cleaner by diluting a few drops of it in a solution of warm water and washing up liquid.
Note for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers:
Not enough scientific information is available to recommend using tea tree oil on the skin during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Animal studies suggest caution in the use of tea tree oil during childbirth because tea tree oil has been reported to decrease the force of spontaneous contractions, which theoretically could put the baby and mother at risk. Women who are breastfeeding should not apply tea tree oil to the breast or nipple since it may be absorbed by the infant.
